Bare triangle geometry — the standard input for 3D-printing slicers.

What is STL?

STL was created by 3D Systems for stereolithography printers and describes a surface as a list of triangles. It has no colors, UVs, materials or units in the standard form.

Because slicers only need the surface, STL remains the default for 3D printing. Units are implied by the application — most slicers read them as millimeters.

Where it is used

  • 3D-printing slicers such as Cura, PrusaSlicer and Bambu Studio
  • CAD and mesh-repair tools
